It’s the day after Max and Ginny’s wedding. Against the advice of people who love them, they head south, away from Wisconsin, in a rickety van. Armed with love and not much more, they search for a place where more than icicles grow in March – so they can live off the land. They’ve got a thousand bucks but no major credit card, and only sixty days before Max will be considered AWOL from the National Guard. On their journey, they tangle with a bodacious bombardier, a gelled judge, a grumpy Greek grandfather, a stubborn stick-shift, cantankerous cops, dumbfounding dialects, high-minded hitch-hikers, insistent insects…and each other.
Don’t Worry Baby is a love letter to the 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964…and a light-hearted history lesson to those who came afterward and can’t believe such events could ever happen. They could.
Don't Worry Baby A 1972 Adventure on Wheels edition by Gail Grenier Literature Fiction eBooks
Ms. Grenier's semi-autobiographical novel treats a complex time period in American history with humor, heart and optimism. The author takes the reader on a trip, literally, through the experiences of newlyweds, Ginny and Max, who get married soon after graduating college. Ginny and Max decide to leave their home state of Wisconsin and embark on an odyssey that introduces the couple to different people and cultures within the southern part of the United States during the 1970's while also delving into the adjustment period and complexities of marriage.Although I was born in 1963, I can remember much of the early 70's, and Grenier nails it! My parent's friends owned a van similar to "Dirk" and I loved riding in the back of their van, sitting on the shag carpet, thinking it was "groovy cool." (Spoiler alert: My parent's friends' van didn't run much longer than "Dirk.") The Chapter entitled, "Honey Pie Sugar Dumplin'" is truly laugh-out- loud funny.
If you're a Baby Boomer looking for a light, well-written book that will definitely put a smile on your face, don't worry baby, this book is for you!

Don't Worry Baby A 1972 Adventure on Wheels edition by Gail Grenier Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I pulled this book out to read as my husband of almost 40 years and I headed out for a 6 week camping trip to Virginia.
I began reading excerpts out load. We laughed not only because we were on our way to the same place where Max and Ginny ended up, but because it brought back so many wonderful memories and similarities from our first several months together as newly weds. At times it almost felt like we were on the trip with Max and Ginny and vice versa.
Wonderful, historically-detailed story depicting the early 1970s, and the hopes, dreams & fears of “Baby Boomers” who were coming into adulthood at that time. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to know (or remember!) what American life & love was like 50 years ago.
Excellent story about two young newlyweds on a great adventure. The story is packed with humor. It put me in stitches.
Cover-to-cover, that's how I read the groovy "Don't Worry Baby." I was transported back to a time ripe with flower power, hippie dreams, macramé, marijuana and self-sufficiency. This was my era, so I was hooked as I traveled along with newlyweds Max & Ginny on their journey south in search of 1972 utopia. Even the soundtrack sucks you in with music (yes, you remember, when we made road trip cassette tapes!) reminiscent of the times Neil Young, CSN&Y, the Beach Boys, Steppenwolf.
Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll - yes, but tempered with the innocence of discovery and being in love, and old-fashioned roots and tradition. You also get a feel for the conflict the country felt, mired deep in the Vietnam War.
Spam sandwiches, Ramblers, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics, Whole Earth Catalog, life without air-conditioning are scattered throughout the crazy stories of the couple as they cross America in an old Corvair van christened "Dirk" that has seen better days.
Loved the hitchhikers, the humor, and the encounter with Greek picnickers.
A truly enjoyable read.
When I first read the description of "Don't Worry Baby", I thought that a story about a young couple on a honeymoon road trip had a plot too simple for my tastes. But since the last mystery I read had a disturbing serial killer, I thought I'd take on chance on something lighter. This book turned out to be a delightful read that I highly recommend. I was so engaged in the adventures of Ginny and Max that I read the book in one sitting. I loved the nostalgic details of the late 60's and early 70's and I laughed more than a few times as Ginny and Max start their marriage on a bumpy road to their dream life.
A fun trip back to the early 70's written with humor, love and spirit - looking forward to more "Ginny & Max" stories!
The story of Max and Ginny's escapades preparing for their wedding, camping at Holy Hill (of all places) on their honeymoon and traveling to a warmer climate are very entertaining. Gail writes in a most descriptive manner, making her tales very visual for the reader, resulting in some outbursts of laughter. My Husband enjoyed my daily report on their interesting means of transportation for this escape from Wisconsin winters. I recommend, "Don't Worry, Baby" as a delightful, fast read for pure enjoyment.
