"This guy is the funniest, freshest voice in Texas mystery writing today. His work stands out like a DayGlo parka in deer season."
—Rick Riordan, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lightning Thief
Guilt Trip
Life in rural Blanco County, Texas, isn't what most folks would call exciting—and that suits game warden John Marlin just fine. He's happy to spend his days and nights protecting the local wildlife from poachers. But when the tequila-slamming, skirt-chasing treasurer of the local Rotary Club goes missing and his vehicle is found in the river the day after a flood, Marlin finds himself in charge of the search efforts. At nearly the same time, a nearby house explodes in a shower of drug paraphernalia, and an exotic car turns up stolen from the missing man's barn. Marlin and Sheriff Bobby Garza are soon overwhelmed, trying to figure out how everything connects together. It isn’t long before events begin to spiral out of control. Edgar Award-nominated author Ben Rehder keeps the plot moving and the laughs coming in another spectacularly funny crime novel straight out of the zaniest imagination in Texas.

Guilt Trip Blanco County Mysteries Book 4 edition by Ben Rehder Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I've been reading all of the Blanco County Mysteries in order and love them all. Guild Trip is no exception although it was the most difficult to read. Not because the story itself is difficult but because of the editing (unless it is intentional). The story, as do the rest in the series, involves a number of characters. Unfortunately, as the story flips from one character to another, there is no break between the story line when the characters shift. By this I mean dialogue between two or three characters simply ends and the next line in the book involves other characters with no break, not even a space denoting the change. The reader is constantly required to take a moment or so to identify the new characters as being other than a continuation of the old conversation and the new. For instance, it might read "Marlin looked up in surprise at the new development" and the next line might read "Lucas wasn't sure anymore that he was right" and then continue with Lucas' narrative until suddenly, again without a break, would jump to "Loretta finally sized up that she had to trick Red".An outstand but extremely confusing read. I'm hoping the net book in this series is more carefully edited.

Guilt Trip Blanco County Mysteries Book 4 edition by Ben Rehder Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I almost didn't read this book, it started out slow and I was put-off by the cheesy writing in the beginning, but I am glad I stuck with it. The writing got better and the story had so many layers, stories upon stories, really that kept you trying to figure out what they all had to do with the story and just how they all tied together, and even when you thought you knew, turns out you weren't entirely correct after all. I liked the characters, all of them, and loved how the writer, Ben Rehder, tied all the story lines together in the end. Quite a fun read, I didn't want to put it down. I will sure watch for another Blanco County mystery again!
This is a good book. But it took me some time to reach this conclusion. At first it is confusing because every chapter introduces new characters. And there are several different plots going on at the same time. To his credit the author does a good job of pulling it all together before I lost interest. Normally, if a book doesn't grab me by the end of the first chapter, I give up on it. There are so many good books to read, I don't waste time on bad novels.
The book is almost all dialog, which is well done and fits the current generation of "hurry up to the chase" readers while I, being an old-fashioned writer and reader prefer character development. I like some depth to my characters so that I get to know them better. The people who populate this novel are thin and transparent - not to say that they are not interesting and weird and they play their parts well.
Elmore Leonard made a very successful and profitable career out of all dialog and weird characters, so this is not a put down of this author's style. And he certainly made me hold on out of curiosity to keep me reading to the last page. I believe this book will appeal to younger readers more than us old farts - but whatever your age it certainly deserves a look.
Perfectly fine book (as are all in this series). However, somebody really fouled up the layout or format for ! Separate sections within chapters are not delineated in any way. The text simply runs along without a separating space or liine of asterisks, etc. Suddenly one is reading one part of the story and without any indication, one is suddenly reading a different story line. It takes a minute to adjust and pick up the thread of the new story line. Very disconcerting. I have never seen this in any other book.
If this has not already been fixed, I hope someone will make the adjustment from this point forward.
State Senator Dylan Herzog has a bit of a problem that might hurt his chances for reelection not to mention the continuation of his marriage. It seems some naughty photographs of him in a late night rendezvous with his secretary have inspired a blackmailer to call with a few demands. He immediately requests the help of one of his well-heeled backers to get him out of the mess. The threat and the reaction to it sets off a domino effect of unintended consequences and partially related events including an on-going feud over the height of ranch fences that takes a deadly turn.
As with previous entries in the Blanco County mystery series, this one has a complexity of interlocking actions, reactions, and seemingly unrelated actions that all blend together into a challenging mystery environment. The main character of John Marlin is involved with parts of the puzzle including the homicide that is uncovered after a flash flood in the county that ends up with his best friend as a suspect in the case.
Red O'Brien and Billy Don Craddock are back again as Blanco's favorite comic relief team, who are again trying to make a dishonest living in the most convoluted ways imaginable.
There are plenty of old returning supporting characters and several new ones, including a new police officer who takes an interest in our favorite game warden.
For readers who enjoy solving along the mystery with the characters, this book has several mysteries going on at the same time, at least one of which can be considered a solve-along. For those readers who just like an entertaining and complex story, this one has you covered too.
This is the fourth installment in the Blanco County series and could be read as a standalone mystery, but knowing the characters and their history through reading the previous books first would make it even more enjoyable.
Highly recommended.
